From a simple sweet factory to a factory of ideas and sweet treats.
Back in 1914, Santo Finocciaro founded the first ever sweet factory in Southern Italy at Giarre, near Taormina, in the shadow of Mt. Etna and overlooking the sea. After returning home from Argentina, he decided to start up a little workshop in Corso Italia, where he and his wife would produce hand-made seets. He was the one who invented sigarette-sweets, for which he received a number of major awards, including gold medals at the Work Exhibition in Milan and in Tripoli.
His passion for the art of confectionery also drew in his son Giovanni who, thanks to his entreprenurial charisma and the tireless help of his wife Maria, worked day and night to ensure that the little factory continued to grow and prosper.
The father's tiny factory evolved into a full-blown confectionery enterprise with the addition of comfits and the “Cannellina” to their traditional range of sweets.
The business then began producing top-quality, pure chocolate products in other premises located nearby.
The family's all-Sicilian passion and confectionery tradition continued between the same four walls, with GAETANO FINOCCHIARO at the helm. He drew on and enhanced the family tradition, and more importantly his father's background, by turning the old sweet and comfit factory into a chocolate shop-cum-literary cafe now listed in the “Locale Storico d’Italia” guide.
In addition to being listed in the “Locale Storico d’Italia” guide, the Fabbrica Finocchiaro is in fact a laboratory of ideas and sweet treats that are conceived there on a daily basis and are then offered for sale around the world, either via a network of distributors or on the Internet via the online store.
